When I was in grade school, my typical Thursday had this rigorous schedule attached to it. (Note the amount of costume changes inherent in the day.)
7:15 AM - School drop off (that's an hour before everyone else.) Wait in the auditorium with the handful of kids whose parents have to go to work too.
8:15 - 3:00 PM School day - Chapel uniform (gray kilt, white button shirt, maroon tie, maroon blazer, knee socks, Sebagos)
3:00 - 5:00 PM Field hockey practice - athletic gear (Umbros, relevant Notre Dame t-shirt, cleats, shin guards, mouthguard)
5:30 - 6:00 PM Piano lesson next door at the Jewish Community Center - school uniform (sweaty version of the above)
6:15 - 7:15 PM Tap dance class - basic leotard (I never had the cool ones), tights, tap shoes
8:00 - 11:00 PM Broadway Series at the Benedum - formal wear by Laura Ashley
Somehow my parents, all while balancing legal and medical careers, enabled my schedule and the schedules of my brother and sister each and every day. How? I don't know. Although, I definitely inherited the same "can do" spirit of my parents, I by no means got their ultimate planning genes. In fact, along with being the worst bridesmaid ever, I am potentially the worst planner too.
Ironically, I was hired as a personal assistant for a year and had the responsibility of managing the family's calendar. Bad hire. With each appointment and calendar entry I scheduled, there was A LOT of rescheduling and reprimanding for not thinking through how these plans would come together.
My Boss: "Um ... how I am I supposed to get from a doctor's appointment in Mt. Lebanon to my nail appointment in Shadyside in twenty minutes, all while I'm supposed to be picking the kids up from school, getting my hair done and getting dressed for an event that starts at 5:00?!"
Me: "Take the Liberty Tubes. I'll pick up the kids. Your hairdresser can do your 'up do' at the same time you're getting the manicure. I'll lay out the dress. You can do it all!"
My Boss: "Reschedule."
I never really learned how to schedule better though. And with a lack of planning genes, no access to a personal assistant to help with rescheduling, and my inability to say "no, can't make it," I tend to go into weekends, like this past one, when all past, present and future forces collide into one non-stop party.
This weekend I had simultaneously agreed to show my friend Rebecca the great city of Chicago (and convince her to move here), go to a bridal shower with my lacrosse teammates in Naperville, spend the weekend in Chicago with The Boyfriend, meet up with a bunch of friends from my MBA program, do a long Marathon training run, and help get #McDiaFeliz to be a trending topic on Twitter.
Did I do it all? Yes I did. Take that!
Did I do it all well? No ... no, not at all.
Friday after work
I headed into the city and went shopping at Macy's on State Street (the old Marshal Fields) I bought a new party dress (I had to, it was on sale!) And I put it on.
I met The Boyfriend at the boat, made a new friend - welcome to the blog Meesh! And then we all cruised down Lake Michigan and into the Chicago River.
Once in the Chicago River, we picked up the MBA friends for a night cruise.
I jumped off the boat around Lake Street at 8:30 PM, scaled up a dock in 4 inch heels, ran through a construction zone, caught a cab, and met Rebecca and her friend Courtney for dinner at NoMi. Good food, good girl talk, too much Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc.| Inside the restaurant overlooking Water Tower place. |
| And outside the restaurant. I will get a good camera someday (or borrow Claire's) |
Saturday
Woke up too early, got some coffee, scheduled tweets to go out all day broadcasting that today was #McDiaFeliz in Brazil and retweeting my message would help kids with cancer! (Amazingly, around 1:00 PM I got a message from Brazil saying that 'McDia' had reached the upper echelon of worldwide tweets - unheard of for our organization. Woot! - that's Twitter talk.)
Ran 13 miles on the Lake (in an hour and a half!) with the remnants of a bottle of wine still swishing around in my stomach - Eww! Never drinking again.
Drove back to Naperville to cheer on Meredith as she opened her gifts. Great metalware!
While there I learned how to make a beautiful ribbon-bouquet ... Hire Mrs. Simon who will come to your shower equipped with a hot glue gun. Seriously impressive!
After lots of laughs, I had even more laughs with the Bride as we made our way back into the city.
Met up with The Boyfriend for an evening in Wicker Park - Margaritas and Lamb Tacos at Big Star. 'Never drinking again' didn't last too long.
Fell asleep in the cab ride home and felt bad that I had failed to meet up for more partying with Rebecca and her friends who were still getting their groove on.
Sunday
Woke up too early.
Walked to Holy Name Cathedral for Mass.
Stopped at The Wit for brunch and to try out their Bloody Mary Bar.
Got a tour of Trump Tower - Bling!
Heard the news of the night's escapades and their Chicago Creepsters from Rebecca and Courtney in Lincoln Park.
Went to Baby Anna's 1st birthday party (also in Lincoln Park) thrown by her mother and party planner extraordinaire, Cousin Katie. Check out her website!
| Seriously, a 1-year-old gets THAT many perfectly wrapped presents! |
| "Mommy, save me!" |
Passed out in Naperville - My bed has never felt so good!
So yes, I did it all, but I was running 30 minutes to an hour late for everything, had to leave each party a little early, and felt horrible by Sunday evening. Unless you are my parents, I would recommend picking one or two things to do, because like me, you'll end up over-promising, under-delivering, and in dire need of another weekend just to relax.
Off to work!
Lo.
